Where did August and September go?

As the age old saying goes, when one door closes another door opens. Although the door didn't totally close, it's swung shut enough to get me back here after two months of data validation and loads for the new computer system. Our migration to Sytline from Mapics was to be live by October 1st. As I type this blog on 10/12 I can assure you that did not happen. The date was quite ambitious but could have been possible if everything fell into place just right. As with many large projects though, that was not the case.

Now as the days fly by we have put the computer project on hold to concentrate on the next huge company change. We are moving locations. It's only about 10 miles away but relocating a business into a new building that is being built-out to meet our needs is quite a task. This must be coordinated to the day in hopes of little interruption to our normal business for the Fabrication Shop, Office and most importantly Warehouse shipping and receiving.

Basically Dynalab Corp. is full of excitement and change with hopes of 2012 bringing clean new surroundings and a slick computer system to follow. My focus has shifted from the computer project back to promoting Dynalab's products and services so I hope to see you here again real soon!

Delay in supply of ADS cabinets

Dynalab Corp. started this year energized about a partnership with ADS to supply their line of safety cabinets including the Bio II Biological Safety Cabinet, Optigel Horizontal Laminar Flow Cabinet and IV-Gel Vertical Laminar Flow Cabinet.

Since the excitement of our product launch which included press releases, we have encountered the reality of red tape associated with selling these products in the United States. Al cabinets are CE marked but the delays have been compounded for UL and NSF certifications. All are in process and we hope to be complete by the Fall of 2011. The ADS products show real promise in the states as the pile of leads shows. Hopefully soon we also have the actual product in house.

Thank you all for your patience. We are proud to represent the ADS line and are doing everything within our power to make these fine products available in the North American market.

All the months of research, interviews, preparation have brought Dynalab Corp / Dynalon Labware to this very day!

You may think I am referring to our go live date for Infor Syteline but unfortunately that's not it yet. This is day one of tangible goods and something new here at Dynalab Corp to make a go live date possible.

Our IT Manager is busy right now moving in the new servers and various other pieces of hardware that will soon be operations central for our company (our employees will always be the backbone of Dynalab). We have spent more than 18 months in time and resources to get here. Fortunately Brian understands what a cryptocluster is (if I even spelled that right). All I have been asking for is a computer system that will aid in more timely and efficient customer service. He's the one responsible for understanding what hardware moves us towards that goal. No pressure right?

The features of this new ERP system are beyond our comprehension after operating this company on "green screen" for probably 25 or more years. We are going to see if "paperless" is just a catchphrase or is it truly possible. What will be do with all those filing cabinets or better yet the band aids for paper cuts!

As we all head out for the long holiday weekend my idea of Independence involves starting back on Tuesday with the hardware in place to get our software project in process. Dynalab Corp. is hoping for an October 1st Independence Day for our customers.

Year of change

This has been a fun week and it's only going to get more interesting throughout the remainder of 2011.

I have been blogging about our new ERP system to be implemented by October 1st, 2011 but haven't given out the surprise yet that Dynalab Corp. is also moving to a new building about 15 miles away. Oh yes, we are up for big challenges this year!

This week has been spent in meetings designing the new building layout and talking with movers. It's been a nice reprieve from the new computer system except our IT Manager has the fortune of being heavily involved in both projects.

This fun will continue for months but we need to keep our customers happy through it all. We're in process on stock control prior to the move. It's tough having the right stock in the right building at the right time when there are 2 of them! The plan is to move in December and be fully functional in the new site upon return from our holiday shut down on January 2nd, 2012.

This all seems so far away but will be here far too soon! New address notifications will be sent in the Fall to all active customers. As for now, this week is over so it's time to meet with my house for a couple days!

Dynalon's first step into social marketing

This was the week, big happenings here at Dynalab. In all the excitement I got the bright idea to open a Twitter account for Dynalon Labware.

We finally narrowed our ERP software choice to one outstanding company with a clear concise software package. This company is yet to be announced publicly but we are quite excited at the new streamlined functionality Dynalab and Dynalon will be experiencing in a matter of mere months.

Now back to the important company announcement, our Twitter account. First I will admit that I was somewhat persuaded by the amount of our Dynalon dealers already representing themselves on Twitter. I realize this is also true of Facebook but baby steps people. Twitter seemed like the best choice to get our toes wet. Setting up a Facebook account takes more initial work and overall supervision. I'm expecting to have a few extra tasks this summer with the ERP implementation so no need to get in over my head on purpose.

Two days into our Dynalon Twitter account and we are following close to 50 companies with a handful of followers. I don't see these numbers exploding as an extensive search was done to compile those 50 companies from our dealers and service providers. It will be interesting though to see where we go from here.

Journal ads seem a thing of the past, we do very few with the majority of our budget going to internet and trade shows. Of course our mainstay is often a 75 cent plastic bottle. Do you know how many ad leads we would need to cover sales of that bottle... MANY!

Our recent introduction of the ADS line of biological cabinets and flow hoods has us looking at journal ads in a new light. Obviously these cabinets sell for several thousand dollars which is often also the cost of a journal ad. So we are biting the bullet and putting an ad in June's edition of LabManager Magazine. They are featuring Biological Safety Cabinets making this ad submission a brainer!

Stock is due here mid-summer so hopefully the piles of leads we get in July will lead to orders!

Overstock, a problem at every company especially a master distributor

The story starts with a customer that suddenly can't get enough of a product you previously sold minimally. This goes great for maybe a year or if you are lucky longer. MRP screams at the buyer, we NEED these! Stock is kept on hand to make sure the newly valuable business remains happy. THEN...

The orders stop, no notice, no explanation just cease and desist. Unfortunately this can take a month or 2 to realize so more stock comes in while little to none goes out.

Before you know it, the most popular item in the warehouse is suddenly stocked at 10 years or better! That takes a lot of overstock sales to regain control. That's where we are right now on this 100 mL Azlon Square Ratio PP Beaker. So long as you don't need more than 15,000 of these little beauties, please feel free to MAKE US AN OFFER we can't refuse!

Lean or lucky?

Tis the season...
vacation season!

This is a time of joy and excitement, a break from the daily grind, unless you are the unlucky people still at work trying to cover all the bases! Next week is spring break for schools in glorious Rochester, NY. The time of year where kids run wild and adults make the decision to spend 3 times as much on airfare or drive way too far in one day to escape the early Spring blues.

Under normal circumstances, Dynalab Corp. is like a well oiled machine where although most people play more than one part, it all comes together for superior service to our customers. In a small company, such is life and we enjoy the challenges. Then comes vacation season and the world explodes, or so it feels like. You are convinced that at full staff it's just never this busy!

The real question then becomes does our company run lean or is it sometimes just luck? Well for the week we just completed we were a lean mean fighting machine coming together to cover a key customer service employee's absence in the beginning of what is our busiest time of the year. To add to the fun, I spent a good part of the week in our final ERP Review meetings so they were essentially cover for two people. The luck comes in when somehow our shortage matches everyone else's and it's quiet enough to survive. Better luck next week...or so I hope!

School spring break next week being combined with a regular holiday on Friday has the vacation request sheets flying in the door! I am hoping for a nice combination of lean and luck to get through four days of business. We have a great team that is dedicated to our customer's satisfaction. The difference for next week is that the same CSR is out again but I am breaking one of my own rules and heading out for a few days too. The only difference is that the laptop and Blackberry that enjoy my vacations.

Social Media for Business

As a company that deals with both distributors and end users one would think we should be jumping all over this social media craze. Which I must admit there have been efforts put into evaluating if it's a good fit but for our company but that's about it at this point. When I started this blog a number of year's back it was at the suggestion of an internet marketing consultant. He said it would connect us directly to our customer base allowing a more personal interaction.

Not that I have been a saint at blogging but as you can see, there have been attempts lately to keep it more active...and personal. There was a time this space was used for sales announcements. That seems redundant to the Dynalab Corp. website. Back to the more personal area, isn't that how most of us use our social media sites like Facebook and Twitter? I know that's the case for me anyways. It's a way to connect with friends and family...but then again I am in my late 30's! I do follow a few business but they are mainly focused on things I enjoy like hotels where I vacation, restaurants that I enjoy and Barnes and Noble so I can keep up with Nook offerings.

As you know, Dynalab Corp. sell plastic lab supplies, custom plastic fabrication and basic science equipment. Maybe people that really enjoy their jobs using our products would be interested in following this type of a company. It's hard to comprehend but entirely possible. This is one of those topics that requires a lot more thought before launching excessive time and efforts into tweets about plastic beakers!

Product replacement on our HDPE 1 gallon containers

Here's how the change starts... we place an order with a manufacturer for a product that has not only been selling but increasing in sales over the past couple years.

Then instead of being notified of the lead time, the manufacturer notifies us that they are discontinuing that product and have no replacement. The tool is old and there are no investment plans to replace it unless we buy some crazy amount that would stock our shelves well into our golden years of retirement. Doesn't seem like a huge deal but in the time between when we placed our PO and were notified, 5 customer orders came in. So now we are also behind the eight ball so to speak.

Not a big deal right? We can just source a similar product for replacement through a different vendor. Simple...unless your buyer of 25 years just left the company (and the snow) to move to Florida! So simple turned challenging quick and turned into a 5 month process to source and actually receive the product in to fill what is now many more customer orders, or shall I say back orders!

This is likely a problem met by distributors much more often in this age of high MOQ from the vendor and JIT on the customer end. Fortunately I am writing this as 873-0000 replacement containers are being received in our warehouse and will be ready for shipment on Monday. Have a nice weekend!

Improve work life and home life improves ten-fold

This week's ERP demonstrations were a real tail wagger!

When our IS project began almost a full year ago my main goal as part of the committee was to figure out how and why we do things currently. Now a year later I wonder, why do we do it like that and how soon can we change? How soon can we optimize our service levels? How soon can we optimize our stock levels to be better prepared for our customer's needs?

One good thing (of many) that has come from this exhausting process is making us think how can we do things better NOW without waiting for software to save the day? I would assume, or at least hope, that every company tries to think that way. In my opinion, we have gone above and beyond to maintain high service levels despite all the manual processes internally. So to dream about how good it will be when software does save the day, makes me one happy employee. When I am one happy employee, my dog wags his tail to the smile on my face when I get home at night!

This sounds corny and like I have no social life. Truth be told, myself and many people in my social circle, spend more waking hours at work than at home. Dynalab Corp. is a nice company to work for, I've been here 15 years. They have built a successful business based on employee loyalty as much as customer satisfaction. I stay because I am treated well, feel as though I have a common goal of business success and overall have made lasting friendships with people whom I interact.

To end this week with another blog entry (two in a row) and in a positive mood excited about the future is nice. Trickle down effect; when we improve our business it leads to satisfied customers and happier employees! Have a nice weekend everyone, time to go see my dog.

I made a New Year's resolution to put weekly entries into our blog...
how am I doing?

Easy answer... not good! If I can't seem to keep up the schedule (which obviously I can't) then I should at least start posting what's going on at Dynalab Corp. keeping me so busy! I am on a team of employees chosen to investigate a new ERP system. This project has been in progress for close to a year now. We spent the majority of that time talking with many key employees and flow charting how we do everything currently.

RFI have been sent to a number of software companies. Now the fun begins, seeing what they have to offer and how it will fit our company's needs. The list is down to a hand full of companies which doesn't seem like many for such an expensive purchase until communication overlaps between them all. Our IT Manager is facilitating that part and I don't envy him at all.

Although we feel our customer commitment is high there are definitely processes that could be automated serving you all better. We want to grow our customer relationships, instill confidence in our abilities and overall grow the business for all.

Now available for the first time in the North American market, SMP40 automatic melting point system uses the latest technology in digital image processing to accurately identify the melt of up to three samples simultaneously

The SMP40 automatic melting point uses the latest technology in digital image processing to accurately identify the melt of up to three samples simultaneously. The unit comes with a 5.7 inch colour VGA display, on which the melt can be watched real time, or the melt video will automatically be saved as an AVI file that can be reviewed later, either on the unit or via PC, providing traceability long after the sample has gone. The result can also be overridden if for any reason you dont agree with the result calculated by the image processing algorithm.

The SMP40 is fully programmable via the touch screen display, once the user has set the plateau temperature up to the maximum temperature of 400°C they can select the ramp rate, between 0.1 and 10°C in 0.1°C increments. During use a library of preset methods can be built up to streamline the method input for repeat measurements. For materials where the user is unaware of an approximate melting point, and therefore unable to set the plateau temperature, the SMP30 can be used in rapid melt mode. During rapid melt mode a fast scan of the full temperature range is undertaken to provide an approximate melt temperature, then a method will be automatically programmed with the appropriate plateau temperature to allow a more accurate measurement to be carried out.

The SMP40 has an innovative split design concept, the unit can be used as normal or the control side and the melt side can be separated, allowing for the maximum in footprint flexibility. After the samples have been loaded the melt side of the unit can be placed at the back of the bench or even in a fume cupboard to catch any potentially dangerous fumes. Once the unit has been split the control panel side can be used in two orientations, either landscape or portrait to allow the perfect viewing angle whether you are sat or stood at the bench, the screen automatically changes orientation with the unit.

The unit can store up to 200 result files with videos, if required data can be easily transferred from the unit to a flash memory drive or PC via one of the USB connectors.

The unit has been designed to include a number of other useful features such as slots to accommodate pre-prepared samples and a draw to house your unused melting point tubes. Also included in the draw is a handy glass cutter, which can be used to accurately cut tubes in half quickly and cleanly for users who prefer to use half tubes.

All units are supplied with a calibration certificate showing individual serial numbers for traceability. The SMP40 conforms to Pharmacopeia and GLP.

SMP30 digital advanced melting point system is designed for fast accurate determination of melting points

Now available for the first time in the North American market, SMP30 melting point apparatus is supplied complete with pack of 100 melting point tubes, open at one end and features a 3 year warranty!

Designed for fast accurate determination of melting points, the SMP30 can take three samples simultaneously within the optimised heating block, the unit has a maximum temperature of 400°C. To allow maximum flexibility a plateau facility is included with variable ramp rate between 0.5 and 10°C in 0.1°C increments. The tubes are illuminated with bright white LED's to give the clearest view of the samples during the melt. The block has been designed for easy access for cleaning, the front of the head is fully removable to allow full access to the micro furnace.

The SMP30 has a large clear back lit alphanumeric LCD display, running the menu system which clearly guides you through the melting process with comprehensive directions. Language is switchable between English, German, French and Italian. It is possible to record up to 8 events in memory for each of the three sample tubes, as well as being temperature stamped these events are also date and time recorded, thanks to the integrated real time clock.

The SMP30 features the patent pending head up display, this unique feature displays a floating image of the block temperature, visible through the eyepiece, in front of the tubes. The head up display eliminates the need for the user to keep switching their gaze between the tubes and the temperature display, through the eyepiece they can now see both at once.

To allow the most comfortable viewing angle the SMP30 features a two stage head adjustment, in the first movement the head is pulled towards the user, then in a separate motion the angle of the head can be adjusted by up to 126°, and will automatically hold in place due to the torsion resistant design to create the perfect viewing angle. The head can then be stored safely back within the body of the unit for storage.

The design of the unit has lots of other useful features such as slots for storing pre-prepared samples and a storage draw to hold a container of capillary tubes.

On September 30, 2009 Martin Davies, President & CEO, and Kathleen DeWitt, Executive VP, completed the purchase of Dynalab Corp from Nova Capital Management of the United Kingdom. The new Principals have every expectation of remaining on site in the Rochester area at 350 Commerce Drive.

Dynalab Corp is a 50 plus year old company in the plastic laboratory supply business with on site plastic fabrication capabilities that sells throughout North America. Today marked the end of an era for Dynalab Corp. We are wishing farewell and happy retirement to a long time employee, co-worker and friend Dick Bonanza.

Dick started working at Dynalab Corp. back in 1963 making this his 46th year of dedicated service. Since our company was established in 1957, Dick sets the record for longest years of service... by far! He has done it all, been a valuable employee in every department and will be missed for many years to come.

Dynalab Corp. management hosted an off-site picnic luncheon today for the entire company in Dick's honor with his family in attendance. Speeches were given by Billy Potter (Design and Manufacturing Engineer), Bob Pfeil (Vice President of Operations) and Martin Davies (C.E.O. and President). There were many smiles, a lot of handshakes and even a tear or two. Dick has been a friend to us all, willing to lend a helping hand whenever possible.

Dynalab Corp. (Dynalon Labware) is an interesting company to work for. In my 15 years here, Dick is only the second employee I have witnessed retire. One may think that's because people don't make Dynalab their career but truly it's just the opposite. We have employees with 10, 20 and even 30 or more years of service still in employment. One of today's speeches (Billy Potter) was a testament to a 30 year friendship and working relationship between these two men. It was fun to hear the stories and spurred later conversations between other long time employees.

Thank you Dick, for all your years of dedicated service and best wishes in retirement! You will be missed as a co-worker and a friend to many.

NAOSMM Boise - A Gem State of Mind

NEW 4 Liter Plastic Cylinder, PP Squat Form

I must admit, when asked to show this new 4 Liter Polypropylene Squat Form Plastic Cylinder at a recent show I thought, this thing is HUGE who could possibly need a cylinder this big? Measuring in with a 8" octagonal base and just under 2' feet tall, this is one serious cylinder!

Steve Yudicky our product manager made sure to point out its features such as the detachable base that unscrews leaving a tube that's 4.875" in diameter with 50mL subdivisions and 500mL graduation markings all the way up one side.

So off I went and to my surprise it was a huge hit (no pun intended). I never thought labs would think this was such an amazing product (did I mention my Art Degree yet today?). Steve was right and the orders are rolling in from all over the world after being in the market only months. So far the demand has been centered in the Industrial segment with numerous labs buying in smaller quantities.

Demand is so strong that I held off posting new product releases until we were sure stock could cover any spikes... which brings me to the here and now. This is a quality plastic cylinder, the largest I have ever seen (again... art major here) with clearly printed blue graduations. It is calibrated TC/TD In 20ºC +/- 50mL and weighs less than 11 lbs when at full capacity.

Use for measuring large volumes, mixing and making up solutions and buffers. Complies with ISO 6706 and US FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for use with Food and Beverage. Autoclavable (repeated autoclaving may affect accuracy).

Overstock - who wins? You do!

In the world of distribution there is a constant guessing game of what to have in stock and how much is enough. The outcome of this game sometimes is a loser for the company but a huge win for the consumer! Dynalab Corp lists our overstock science equipment and plastic lab supplies in the "Specials" section of our website.

These items can be reduced in cost sometimes 50% or more just to get our inventory levels back in line. These are all brand new, no scratches, dents or other defects and would be an excellent buy for any laboratory, school or industry looking to save a few dollars and in this current economy aren't we all trying to save a few dollars?

One such example are the short form Hydrometer Racks shown above manufactured in our Rochester, NY custom plastic fabrication facility. Manufactured from chemically resistant high density polyethylene, this sampling device is perfect for corrosive environments and for hard to reach places. The included polypropylene 100 ml or 500 ml (4 oz or 16 oz) bottle screws into the end of the handle and is filled via four ports (2 allowing liquid to enter and 2 allowing air to escape). 2009... how many times have we all written 2008 in the past 5 days? It gets better, although for some us we were writing 2009 already looking forward to better days in the new year. It looks to be a challenging year on the horizon for the US economy.

Gas prices have been on the decline which is leading many users of plastic lab supplies to expect price reductions but we haven't seen many of these decreases from our vendors as of yet. Should that change though, Dynalab Corp. President Martin Davies has already established he is open to passing our decreases on to the consumers. We all just need to wait and see what happens at this point.

What Dynalab Corp. is doing right now to ease some price increases is evaluating our stock for what we can move at drastically reduced pricing due to overstock. We are offering our HDPE Wide Mouth Amber Laboratory Bottles at 50% off list price in the month of January. Leakproof, rigid and amber these high density polyethylene wide mouth lab bottles have excellent chemical resistance and are suitable for sampling and storage of light sensitive materials. Renewing the Energy in Science Education

Dynalon Labware will be exhibiting our line of plastic lab supplies and science equipment at the 2008 Area NSTA Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio from December 4th through the 6th, 2008. Our Product Manager Steve Yudicky will be traveling down with Dynalab Corp. President Martin Davies to attend the three day event.

The focus is on energy at the Cincinnati area conference. The conference headquarters hotel is the Millennium Hotel. Conference registration and some sessions and events will be at the Duke Energy Center, as will the exhibits and the NSTA Science Store. Additional events will be held at the Millennium Hotel and Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza.

The conference will begin with concurrent sessions on Thursday, December 4, at 8:00 AM. The conference will end on Saturday, December 6, at 12 Noon with the closing of the exhibits.

We are anticipating a catalog similar in size to our last full line, around 130 pages listing our most popular Azlon, Kartell and Sterilin product lines along with our plastic fabrication products made right here in Rochester, NY.

Dynalon relies heavily on our loyal distributors to sell direct to the end users and this catalog introduces many new products that we hope will cause a buzz in the market.

Plans are for this catalog to be available in January of 2009 with the pricing structure set up to match the dealer price books. Dynalon distributors will automatically be mailed the updated catalog along with a form for additional requests.

Dynalab Corp. is very fortunate that our management is excellent at offering fun competitions and gatherings to bring the employees together. It has been tradition to have a costume party each year with winners competing more for the applause than the actual gift card or lottery tickets being given away. This year was no exception.

We had costumes ranging from Luke (shown left) wearing a dinosaur costume with a cave man riding shotgun to a nurse, some scary dudes and no Halloween is complete without a couple pirates! (Luke is my dog but he comes to work on occassion to eat everyone else's lunches. This saves me on dogfood expense and is certainly a bright spot to the hard work we all put in here at Dynalab.)

Thank you to everyone who participated in today's costume contest and congratulations to Karen Smedly this year's winner! Karen was dressed as an elderly woman who lost her puppy and if this picture was taken from behind you would certainly be able to help her find it! Great costume Karen.

Logo Redesign and Graphics

New company, new logo!

It was time we broke free and lightened the load so to speak as the old logo was quite weighty and said nothing about our company. We had been using the previous logo since the late 1990's so it's time was up. Our new corporate colors are an orange and blue combination. The website will also undergo a facelift of sorts in the coming months.

We also redesigned the Dynalon (wholesale division) logo to include the phrase "quality.service.value". Both tag lines were chosen from employee entries. Along with this redesign came new trade show graphics and literature.

Our banner stands and table drops were purchased through Camelback Displays Inc. These will be shown for the first time at a Laboratory Product Sales tradeshow being held at Cornell University on Halloween day. Our Product Manager Steve Yudicky will also be showing off some of our new Kartell products being introduced for 2009.

This is an exciting new fiscal year for Dynalab Corp. so far. Thank you to all of our loyal customers!

TGIF, one more to go...

The good news is, it's FRIDAY! The bad news is, there's only one more Friday before our fiscal year end which means the craziness is ramping up by the minute. As some of you may know, Dynalab has been tossed around a bit for the past 10 years since being bought by then UK company Bibby Sterilin. The entire group was then bought by Barloworld out of South Africa and most recently (last Fall) by another UK company Nova Capital.

Since Nova Capital is a holding group, we are sort of back out on our own which means this is the first year that our year end numbers are truly ours! It's been an exciting year though and despite the rising energy and raw materials costs we are somehow weathering the storm. As you may have read in an earlier entry, we bucked the system and held our prices through the end of the year when much of our competition caved to the mid-year increase.

This means we have put hours of time reviewing the most effective increases, truly line by line on over 3,000 line items to make sure our customers are getting the most fair prices possible. It would be simple to throw a flat rate across the board and call it a day, but we resisted that urge and opted to "get it right" so to speak.

Our 2009 pricing will start entering the market in the month of October to give our customers time to adjust prior to the January 1st effective date. We hope you can understand the need for these increases, as we keep saying to each other, have you filled up with gas in your car lately? There is the answer to our increases, plastics are a petroleum based product which leaves us no choice but to pass these massive increases on to our customer base.

As the summer heat rises it seems so are the prices in the laboratory supply sector. Over the past couple weeks there have been rumors and confirmations from such companies as ThermoFisher that prices will be rising mid-year to consumers on such products as laboratory plasticware.

We as a manufacturer / supplier have been absorbing the constant resin increases for months now but it has become unbearable and actually risky to our businesses to continue as if nothing is happening. We receive price increases sometimes weekly at this point on our purchased in goods for distribution. To say margins are dwindling is an understatement, they are dropping!

Dynalab Corp. / Dynalon Labware have decided to forego the mid-year increase (many of our competitors and distributors are raising prices on August 1st, 2008) with plans to hold out for a full year increase in the 2009. We hope our customers appreciate our efforts and continue with business as usual.
